The Center of Battery Sustainability (CBS) was co-founded by MIT Professors Martin Z. Bazant, Richard D. Braatz, and Northeastern Professor Juner Zhu to discover new science and develop novel technologies to make batteries sustainable. We perform pioneering research in three focus areas (FAs): efficient assessment, data-driven decision-making, and battery circularity. In each FA, we develop two technical projects (TPs) to work on with industrial collaborators.
FA-1: Efficient Assessment of Battery Health and Safety
TP1.1: Electro-Chemo-Mechanical Testing & Modeling
TP1.2: Nondestructive Safety & Health Assessment
FA-2: Data-Driven End-of-Life Decision-Making for spent Batteries
TP2.1: Lifetime Prognostics and End-of-Life Decisions
TP2.2: Second-Life Battery Management
FA-3: Battery Circularity
TP3.1: Lifetime Extension & Direct Recycling
TP3.2: Critical Mineral Extraction & Re-use
As of September 2023, we are setting up the "Research" memberships with two companies and "Participant" memberships with six companies.
